Fillion, perhaps one of the most underrated of Hollywood actors, manages to portray the complex character seemlessly with an excellent blend of cheeky charm and mild bad boy with that of the burned out writer looking for inspiration and excitement. He also exudes charisma and intrigue as Castle tries to untangle the mysteries surrounding the case. This brings him at odds with Beckett who is a little annoyed and suspicious of the author’s blasé attitude towards the killings. Together, however the pair make a formidable combination with Beckett as a first-class investigator with a rare ability to empathise with victims combined with Castle’s years of researching criminology, forensics and psychology. These skills used with his creative flair and touch of irreverence to homicide cases, adds a dynamic element to the character whose contrasting approach and attitude causes sparks to fly.
Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Desperate Housewives) is Richard Castle, a best-selling crime novelist who, despite fame and acclaim, has become bored with his own success leading him to kill off the hero of his bestseller series only to find he is suffering from writers block. All that changes [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, when New York homicide Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) questions him concerning a real-life copycat murderer staging scenes from his own novels. Using his influence with the Mayor, Castle has himself assigned as consultant on the case, not only to help find the killer but also to research material and characters for his new book.
Providing the other half of what promises to be a chalk and cheese duet exuding chemistry and symmetry, is Canadian actress Stana Katic in her first television starring role as Detective Kate Beckett. By contrast Beckett is a far more serious individual who takes her job seriously, so when Castle is brought into the mix with his cheeky swagger and seemingly blasé attitude, her blood starts to boil. Whilst Beckett is an intelligent and observant investigator with all the street smart of a beat cop, there is a danger of her falling into that police cliché. Yet Katic’s straight laced portrayal is engaging and plays off brilliantly against the more laid back self serving author. Killer Cast
Any avid viewers of crime fiction watching this first episode will no doubt determine the outcomes before they unfold yet this does not necessarily make the episode less enjoyable, simply lacking in substance. The main disappointment however lies in the fact this is a one case episode and is over too quickly. The story might well have benefited from being stretched over a few more episodes. Writer and Creator Andrew W Marlow (Hollow Man and recently announced Marvel project Nick Fury) has, however, crafted a script full of entertaining banter and some intriguing principle characters. He also demonstrates a real eye for the macabre as evident by the creative ways in which the victims are found.
Copy Cat Mystery Killer
The concept of novelist cum crime fighter/detective has been the central story line of many books, films and television series and initially the idea of yet another story in this rank seems a little tiresome. Like many of the other shows of this type, this latest sleuth offering is light in execution and atmosphere given the dark nature of its subject matter.
