Brazil is where I feel most creative. I spend several months a year there, fine-tuning my designs and producing the collection, she said.
The store has an Alice in Wonderland feel to it, with rows of colorful candylike gemstones, graphic toy-inspired pieces, moving and ticking with an energy all their own.
A client who walks into the store immediately sees that everything moves, rattles and comes alive like in a childs universe, Ms. Sonia said.
Her main collection, aptly titled Perpetual Motion, features pieces inspired by childrens toys in which colored stones tumble freely in their settings.

The Spinning Wheel, one of her signature pieces, is a ring-shaped golden cage pendant in which the stones roll like pebbles, a playful counterpoint of sound and motion.
I want my pieces to create the same kind of excitement a child feels for a new, fantastic toy. These pieces are like having a personal toy around your neck, Ms. Sonia said.

This collection is bridal with a twist, she said. I was not terribly inspired by the idea of traditional bridal jewelry. So I chose a certain symbolism of marriage over its conventional representation.
For her Swinging Circles line a provocative title for a bridal collection Ms. Sonia chose a circular setting in which the stone rolls and rotates, a metaphor for a union in which the individual, though part of a couple, remains almost completely free.
I have never been fond of the bezel or the prong setting. I prefer to set the stone free, the jeweler said.
Likewise, her Rock collection, originally conceived as a modern twist on the traditional engagement ring, is a slightly tongue-in-cheek version of the stone on a womens finger.
A commonly held view is that the size of the rock should match a mans love. In New York, you often see girls wearing a tiny diamond held up by huge prongs, trying to exaggerate the size of the rock, she said. Her reinterpretation of that clich is a large rough-cut gemstone held up high by two oversized prongs, each set with two tiny brilliant-cut diamonds at the end.
In addition to her playful designs, colorful gemstones have become a trademark of her work, revealing the main inspiration for her collection, her adopted Brazilian roots.
