Who is officer 6620 and how does he fit into all this? And what is the true nature of Jim Keats? And why was Luigi so excited about his news in a seemingly throwaway scene in a programme that does nothing without meaning?
As an audience we still don’t know what this means but we do know the three characters are now all in the same boat and terrified of what it might mean.
Chris sees stars for the first time
This theme of him going over to the dark side is progressed here as he frees Tobias from his cell because he believes it is the right thing to do, despite the ambiguity over whether Tobias is implicated in the planned attacks. This leads to a dramatic and violent confrontation with Hunt who expects obedience and takes umbrage with Chris’ defiance to tow the line. However at the denouement of this story strand they hug and Gene shows his true respect for Chris. Shortly afterwards Chris sees the stars with Shaz and Ray and hears Nelson from “Life on Mars”. Each time it has been the positive affirmation of Hunt which has prompted these moments.
One of the stranger (and it is all relative in the world of Ashes to Ashes) elements of this run has been that Shaz and Ray have witnessed the stars and had their Life on Mars moment, whereas Chris has been veering towards another path, calling Jim Keats “Guv” and roughing up inmates in their cell.
We get some wonderful chemistry from our two leads in this episode [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], better than anything that has gone before. They even go on a date which leads to them discussing “the elephant in the room” topic, namely did Gene kill Sam? Hunt admits that he helped Sam fake his own death. This confession leads to a romantic clinch between them which is disturbed with Keats arrival at Alex’s flat. He provides details of a shallow grave [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], could it be Sam’s? Alex leaves to find out as the episode ends.
As has been typical throughout the third series the plot of the week has not been particularly intriguing and has been overshadowed by the central themes. That was the situation again here as a morality play regarding a character called Tobias and his possible links to ANC bombings of the South African Embassy developed. This narrative did not really go anywhere but it did link into the over arcing theme concerning Chris Skelton.
Keats almost becomes feral in this episode in his desperation for Alex Drake to nail Hunt. He has also compiled tapes on Shaz [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chris and Ray but what do they say? Do they hide the true nature of these characters? And we still don’t know why Keats hates Hunt so much.

Ashes to Ashes Series 3
Alex and Gene and the mystery of Sam Tyler
So many questions are to be answered in one last episode of this wonderful show. Even Hunt refers to his battle for supremacy with Keats as “the final chapter”. What is the true nature of our beloved Fenchurch team seeing stars? Is it some sort of psychological construct that is breaking down and if so who’s mind are they in? Or is it some sort of limbo between Heaven and Hell?
Who will survive the final chapter and how will this all be sewn up?
For six weeks audiences have been teased with various intricate mysteries running throughout the series and all of them were present in this cracking episode.
The Ashes to Ashes Series Finale
Jim Keats closes in on Gene Hunt
Did Gene really help Sam fake his own death and if the trailer is to be interpreted a particular way, is Sam back? And what about the character of Thordy from episode six who claimed to be Sam Tyler.
