n a novice rose gardener starts reading the long list of rose diseases and pests they might well want to reconsider embarking on growing roses. Their vision of spending a leisurely time tending beautiful healthy roses that are flowering profusely in their rose garden changes to one of themselves in combat attire fighting of the many attacks of an endlessly long list of diseases and pests. Fortunately it is not as bad as the rose disease and pest list makes it out to be.
There are plenty of non-toxic (for us and our roses not for the pest or disease) strategies to prevent rose disease from happening and to ward off any rose pests that might come snooping around. One hugely important one is to have a varied garden, so no mono-culture. Always have other flowering plants nearby as well as herbs and even vegetables. By emulating nature you will create a healthy balanced garden environment in which disease and pests do not easily get a foot hold. Of course you can have the roses as a stand alone feature but do have some herbs not too far off.
Rose disease is much more likely to affect a plant if it is stressed. A rose that is well fed, watered and pruned is either not going to be affected by a disease at all or if it is it will be able to resist it and especially with a little help from you the gardener overcome it all together. There certain nutrients that are most important to make rose be resistant to fungal rose diseases. The main one is potassium. Trace elements also play an important role.
Fungal Rose Diseases. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list at all but it lists the ones you really need to know about. Black spot shows up as spots on the leaves and the affected plants tend to loose leaves. Botrytis blight which shows up a browny grey fungus on the affected flowers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rots the plant where the rose is affected by it and causes the flowers to die prematurely. Stem canker gets transmitted by dirty tools from one plant to another as it gets entry into the rose via the cut when you are pruning. So keep your snips clean and wipe it off when going from one rose to another. It is possible to loose the whole plant if it enters the crown. Powdery mildew looks just like the name suggest a white fungus on the upper part of the leaves. Plus often some leaves will be distorted. Downy mildew is rather mild and not really a concern but still treat it the same goes for Rust.
Fungal rose diseases do better during damp weather especially if it is reasonably warm as well. Wet leaves make it easy for fungi to get a hold on the plant. Watering is best done first thing in the morning so that the leaves may dry. When pruning keep your cutting tool from transmitting a disease by cleaning it of with a sterilizing liquid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or rag soaked with this liquid, such as an essential oil solution or even just plain old vinegar.
Rose Disease - Viral.
Rose mosaic virus and Rose wilt are the main rose viruses to concern ourselves with when it comes to rose growing.
Rose wilt means that the affected plant needs to be thrown away in the bin. Leaves turn down and so will other parts of the plant. The plant does not grow much and there is loss of color from the leaves.
Rose mosaic virus has quite a distinct way of showing up with leaves turning yellow and patchy plus flowers getting distorted. Unsterilized pruning implements transmit this disease.
Some Rose Pests are:
Thrips,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Red spider mites, Aphids, White fly, Caterpillars and so on.
A poly-culture garden will keep these pests from taking over. Even though they might be present they are not likely to cause a major problem in a poly-culture.
Grow a "nature " garden and you will have healthy balanced plant life that can withstand any passing rose disease or pest. Organic rose gardening will help you spend more time admiring your roses than crying over them. Set your garden up right and that long list of rose diseases and pests will no longer worry you.
