The imbalance due to migration towards these extremes can often be caused by events in a character's history simply for the 'sympathetic shoulder' or 'conqueror of all' moment when required. However, one must find a balance in personality, and make it compliment the past of your character. This does not mean that players should not create murderers or nuns, but no one is born a sinner or a saint.

Don't hesitate to use colorful descriptions. If a character would commit a grisly murder with a smile on his face and a glint in his eye, feeling quite satisfied afterwards, describe it that way. Describing how a character developed some of his personality traits also helps both the creator and other players understand the character better, and makes playing with them more interesting.
Things to Avoid
Very often the players that are new to Character Applications consider the personality to be a very trikcy part of their biographies. While personality plays a vital part in making the character interesting to play with, one should be very careful when writing personality. It is in human nature to migrate towards stronger, more capable or weak and completely helpless in the hopes of causing awe or sympathy in other characters, but this can cause a character to become disliked and avoided.
The most common mistake made by players when writing personality is creating a complete imbalance between history and personality. This is the main pitfall where good characters can quickly turn into Mary Sue's or Gary Stu's1. If a character experienced something traumatic as a child, it should somehow reflect in their present personality. Perhaps they shy away
The Basics
Before thinking about elaborate personality traits for a character, a player should take the time to consider what he can describe. Creating a list of these key words can be done by looking at the history of a character and major events in said history, such as taking longer to speak, being picked on, having imaginary friends [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having a wealthy upbringing, dropping out of college and so forth. All these are things that can be described in detail.
Once a player has an idea of the basic elements he needs to describe his character's personality [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he can proceed to add more details. By using the list of basics as mentioned above he can be sure that most areas of personality will be covered by his description. One can even, in good humor, consider Schrodinger's Cat - while wealth might have made him unsympathetic, it could also have made him aware of his ability to help charities. The paradoxes in Personality make writing it so much more interesting.
'Fleshing Out' the Basics
The Creator shouldn't be afraid to think outside the box when decided what to describe. Even losing a teddy bear can be on the lists of basic items to describe. A Wealthy upbringing could cause a character to be unsympathetic to those in need, and blinding to the poorer world while a child with imaginary friends might develop a personality disorder. Never miss any detail - while not all personality traits can be gleaned from character history, most can.
Don't be afraid or hold back when writing personality. These descriptions are what make a character unique and interesting, and opens doors for future development. However, a player should be wary of making his character too fantastical or abnormal. A serial killer with two personalities are good, but "Murderous, vile criminal with a lust for death and seventeen co-inhabitants of the mind" sounds almost fantastical, and perhaps a little clinical.
