Hossa, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] have more than 1 goal in mind
There are plenty of stats that highlight the Blackhawks’ struggles.
The Hawks have allowed 32 power-play goals in 42 games; last season they allowed 39 in 82.
They’ve allowed 50 goals in the third period — the most in the NHL.
They’ve allowed 65 goals at home — the second-most in the NHL as of Thursday.
But a lack of scoring from two Hawks also sticks out. Since returning from their injuries, Marian Hossa and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] have combined for only one goal in 11 games between them.
“We’re getting the chances to score and creating some offense, but now it’s definitely time to start producing and making sure when we get those chances, they’re going in,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said.
“We know our jobs, and we have to be better at that,” Hossa said.
Hossa and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are part of that oft-discussed and praised Hawks core, which has had its ups and downs. Hossa, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and coach Joel Quenneville all said Thursday that it’s time for the Hawks’ top players to overcome everything, lead and produce.
“Our top guys, we expect them to be our top players,” Quenneville said. “That’s always going to be what makes the ship work and go.”
The Hawks are too reliant on one or two guys. Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews have been carrying the load lately.
“You just can’t have [Sharp] and [Toews] going,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “You got to have the other guys helping them, the go-to guys. That’s what was so good about our team last year. We had different guys step up every night.
“For both of us, it’s something we take pride in: scoring goals, making plays and trying to help out the offense. When you’re not doing that, it’s definitely not a good feeling.”
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Hossa often have said that it has been a struggle regaining their timing after missing significant time with injuries.
“Not being able to be myself, it is frustrating,” said Hossa, who has one goal and two assists in six games since returning Dec. 26 after missing 10 straight with a lower-body injury.
“We have to lead the team, and the rest of the team has to follow. We have to find a way to be better on special teams, especially on special teams with the veteran guys. We have to be better.”
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has three assists in his last five games after missing eight in a row with an ankle injury.
“Both of us came off some injuries where we were out for a while,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “That’s something I’ve never dealt with before, being out that long. So it’s different, but you’re not trying to make excuses for yourself.”
There have been signs of them breaking out, but until they produce consistently, the Hawks will struggle.
“Whether it’s the power play or five-on-five play, we need some production from our top guys,” Quenneville said.
“I’m not letting anybody off the hook here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether it’s [[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]] or [Hossa] or whoever.’’
