Instruction in Chinese is increasingly growing which is faster than any other language in Minnesota and is on the rise nationally. The new word has created some buzz among parents at Saturday's school-choice fair: Chinese immersion.
A popular charter school offering Chinese immersion -- in which students receive instruction in all subjects in Chinese -- recently found its place in Minneapolis, creating some surprise.
Those fathers and mothers who had their children in Yinghua Academy -- the Chinese-immersion charter school -- but pulled them out when the school moved to Minneapolis, might be interested as well, she said with some confidence.
It is planned that the Mandarin Chinese immersion program will start at Benjamin E. Mays Elementary. Superintendent of the school hope the new Chinese immersion program -- which will also have a focus on science and math -- will draw in families not currently enrolled in a St. Paul district school.
In addition, there is a Chinese-immersion pre-school in the district that has about 80 children and could serve as a feeder. There was probably a great opportunity to serve the east metro with a Mandarin program.
Mrs. Cheng has a daughter in kindergarten at Chinese immersion Yinghua Academy and says she's happy with the school, but "this certainly is a great addition to our Choice of Chinese immersion school the city."
"It is really exciting for us to hear it," said a parent of St. Paul when told about the Chinese immerse program.
According to a 2010 survey,Hong Kong mandarin course, Chinese is a distant fourth -- behind Spanish, French and German -- in terms of enrollment in world languages in the city.
Obviously, the state has placed a priority on Chinese teaching and has lent a hand in finding qualified Chinese Putonghua teachers. “We setting up partnerships with organizations in China that have so far sent five Chinese Putonghua teachers to these schools, said John Melick, the department's director.
The Schools began providing a Chinese-immersion option at two of its primary schools in 2006,mandarin class Hong Kong, and around 40 percent of eligible families have signed up, said district spokeswoman Janet, "Parents in the program are extremely satisfied with the offer of such Chinese immersion program."
The numbers of students above don't include an additional 1,000 students in the state's five Chinese immersion schools.
The district also offers Chinese language teaching at Highland Park Primary and Highland Park Junior and Senior Middle and at Central High Schools.
The new Chinese Mandarin immersion program "is a complex undertaking," said Bernal, "we here in St. Paul have a lot of experience with developing quality Mandarin immersion programs," Bernal said. "If I had a kid that age, I would put him in the Mandarin immersion program as it is really good."
