Intimate and Everyday Life in Paris
Some of the vignettes are fanciful, with that ever present French sense of whimsy. In Tour Eiffel, we see the world through the eyes of a mime couple as they send their son off to school. Others focus on the tragic moments of life. In Bastille, a man sits in a café waiting for his wife to arrive so he can tell her he is leaving her for an air stewardess. Instead, she arrives with news of her own [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], progressive leukemia. He abandons his plans and nurses her until the very end.
As the vignette comes to a close, we find her sitting in a park doing her best to revel in her solitude. On that bench, surrounded by Parisians enjoying a spring day, she has a realization. there, alone in a for
Having a movie set in a city that has so many visitors, it would be easy to focus on the postcard views and the famous sites. What is refreshing about each director’s take on Paris is that the majority of them choose to celebrate the small moments of everyday life in the bustling city. In Loin de 16e, a mother awakes before dawn and drops her baby off at a state nursery. After endless trips on various public transports, she arrives at work. She spends the rest of her day caring for someone else’s baby before she heads back to the suburbs.

A New French Movie Musical
Falling in Je T'Aime With Paris
Paris, Je T’Aime (Paris, I Love You) is one of those unique movies that speaks to you on many levels. At first glance, it is a movie filled with amazing talent. The 18 vignettes focus on each of Paris’ 20 arrondissements (districts) and are directed by a mix of well known and up-and-coming directors like: the Coen Brothers (Oh Brother Where Art Thou), Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting), Alfonso Cuaron (Y tu Mama Tambien), Wes Craven (Scream), Alexander Payne (Sideways) and Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham). Within the vignettes the same level of acting talent is seen. Gerard Depardieu, Gena Rowland, Bob Hoskins and Juliette Binoche bring their considerable talent to the characters they portray. The unknown actors, many French, embody a freshness and realness that adds a sense of honesty to each character.
The most touching vignette comes at the end of the movie. In 14e, the audience meet Carol, an American who is regaling her French class with tales of her recent trip to Paris. In her elementary French, she narrates her adventure, though from the scenes we can see that the two tellings rarely match up. She may claim to be more than content seeing the wonders of Paris solo but you cannot help but sense a melancholy from her as she walks through the city alone.
In the opening minutes of Quais de Seine, three mildly obnoxious teens sit on the banks of the Seine catcalling to the women that pass by. Nearby a young Muslim girl eavesdrops on their desperate attempt to get attention. She gets up to leaves but trips. Francois, one of the teens, jumps to her aid. As she cleans herself up [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he asks why she covers her beautiful hair with a scarf. This discussion is particularly relevant in France these days, when the government has passed bills against the wearing of head scarves in public schools. As they make their way through the side streets of the neighborhood, he asks her more questions, offering an honesty that is often hidden in a polarized world. They converse until she reaches her final destination, her local mosque. Instead of returning to his routine [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Francois is transfixed. He meets up with her again and is warmly welcomed by her father and offered a place at a family meal.
