Are You Afraid? - The Plot of Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark
It's a cold windy night. The streetlights flicker off and on, darkening the streets, It's quiet outside - quieter than usual as the only sound present is the rustling of leaves as a fall breeze blows through the neighborhood. These are the images that fuel the 1973 made for TV movie Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, although a bit dated, still holds up today. With creepy music [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], excellent timing and suspense - it's a movie which not only proves to haunt childhood fears but is also capable of pooling over into adulthood, making for restless nights and well lit basements.
The way the movie handles the atmosphere and suspense is stellar. The way tension ebb and flows and builds and peaks makes for a roller coaster of a scary movie. The timing is spot on and the creepy music makes for an incredibly ominous mood.

Teaser Trailer for CGI Zombie Film
While this film is very strong and a movie which ruined many bedtime's for children - it's not without its fair share of flaws. For one some of the acting is understated, especially the performance of Kim Darby. While her portrayal of Sally is strong there are moments where Darby seems lackadaisical. Another issue is the make up and special effects. The creatures, when seen in full body shots, look laughable and ridiculous. They come off as a bit too clunky to seem threatening. Granted, the film is thirty seven years old and can't really be judged too harshly on poor effects.
This film drills home a primal fear felt by all throughout the scourge of childhood. It's a movie that serves as a lens that allows people to look back and remember why they would sleep with a nightlight on or check under the bed and in the closet before drifting off to sleep. What goes bump in the night - an eternal question that this film explores with finesse.
