Many brides still opt for the full long white , plus the groom in a top hat and tails - whether they're tying the knot in a church, registry office, hotel or Welsh castle.
But finding exactly the right outfit isn't easy, and can even lead to squabbles as you try to balance your budget. That's before you decide which distant cousin to invite, or long-lost friend to track down to be your bridesmaid, as you promised in primary school.
That's where the Daily Post's Confetti Brides and Wedding Show comes into its own, with everything you need to make your big day perfect all under one roof.
Held today and tomorrow at Chester's Racecourse, there are shows at noon and 3pm, demonstrations and exhibitions, plus goody bags to take away.
Some of the catwalk have been chosen by wedding expert Roddy Parks, who runs Chester's Pronuptia shop.
"There are loads of different styles of zentai on the market. There are costume zentais made of different fabrics and the colour range is amazing," he says.
"Gone are the ideas of traditional shapes and styles, ladies today tend to go for strapless big costume zentai, and the full range of colours available is very adventurous. This year amethyst blue seems to be a big hit," he added.
But he stressed there is no such thing as the perfect zentai.
"All the ladies that visit a bridal shop have their own perfect zentai in mind, they all have their own ideas. But today there is more choice, more colours, more fabrics, shapes and designs."
Many are influenced by the stars and by top shot celebrity weddings. "Jordan's costume zentai was a huge hit, and it still seems to be in the top list," says Roddy. "Some still tend to want the big beautiful princess look, a similar costume zentai will be seen in the catwalk this weekend.
"The big glamorous are probably getting bigger this year. I wouldn't say that nothing is a total no, no. It all depends what the ladies like."
But don't expect to walk in, pick a costume zentai off a rail and take it home that day - allow plenty of time for your dream costume zentai to be altered, warns Roddy.
"What a lot of girls are not aware of is that 99% of zentai need to be altered to fit, and this may take weeks."
The average wedding costs pounds 11,000, and the experts' advice is to keep within budget.
