Even Owl City’s, Adam Young, seems to get a shout out in “Enchanted”—you can pretty much assume everything you need to about this song from the title. The only connection between these two stars seems to be an Owl City concert that Swift attended last year. I guess she developed a cru
Her stab at John Mayer (in the appropriately titled “Dear John”) is far better articulated and some of Swift’s strongest material to date, musically speaking. The track basically belittles Mayer for being a self-involved man-child, and I can’t imagine anyone jumping to quickly his defense. This song seems far more organic than some of the other celeb-inspired songs on the album, but some may argue that calling him out by name was a bit much.
Joe Jonas (who was already the highly publicized subject of last record’s “Forever and Always”) is believed to be the inspiration behind “Last Kiss”, a sappy, whiny ballad towards the end of the record that laments a lover leaving without saying goodbye. Back in 2008, Swift revealed on The Ellen Show that Jonas dumped her by way of a 12 second phone call (hey, at least he didn’t just text!) and this song just seems to overdramatize the situation to the max. I guess she felt “Forever and Always” didn’t fully encapsulate the pain she felt, so she had to make it vividly clear in one of her weakest songs to date.
She’s on her way to achieving the best first weeks sales of 2010 with Hits Daily Double estimating between 800 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 and 900 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 in sales and some sources predicting over a million units will be sold. At 20 years old, Taylor Swift has taken the music world by storm and her third album, Speak Now is proving to be no exception. Swift has never been shy about her transparent approach to songwriting, allowing her listener’s an inside look on what could very easily be a diary entry.
The small town environment Swift was raised in has been replaced by celebrity status now, which has opened the door for many high-profile relationships. Proving that she’s just as down to earth and unafraid to be honest as ever, these relationships are examined with full disclosure on her latest release. Is this just her exercising with artistic freedom or capitalizing on her buzz-worthy love life?
If you have had a romantic encounter with Taylor Swift since the release of Fearless [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chances are that you make an appearance on Speak Now. Some are even speculating that Swift has included codes within her liner notes to make it is easier to decipher who a particular song is about.
Swift’s unfiltered style of songwriting has earned her the praise of critics and fans alike. Throughout this process, she has berated cheating boyfriends (“Should’ve Said No”), sung about a magical first date (“Today Was a Fairytale”) and wrestled with the pain of a breakup (“Breathe”). However, sometimes she gets so personal that she actually includes the name of the song’s intended subject. Drew is the reason for the teardrops on her guitar, she sings to Cory in the bittersweet balled “Stay Beautiful”, “Mary’s Song” tells the story of her next door neighbor and the most obvious example of this is track number three off of Fearless, “Hey Stephen”.
Boyfriends aren’t the only ones mentioned by name. “The Best Day” relives fond memories she shares with her family and the cautionary tale of “Fifteen” tells the story of her best friend, Abigail, losing her virginity to a guy who didn’t really intend on staying with her. Very few artists are this brutally honest and open, and some are beginning to wonder if Swift’s tendency to write this way is actually a good thing.
