BOSTON -- [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] made a major mistake in the Boston Bruins 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, and Bruins coach Claude Julien benched him for it.
With the game knotted at 1-1 early in the third period, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] gained control of the puck in his own end, to the right of goaltender Tuukka Rask. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] attempted to flip the puck out of the zone to get a much-needed line change, but he fanned on the play and put the puck right on the stick of Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck, who notched the game-winning goal at 2:22 of the period.
Julien shifted his lines around and No. 91 was not on any of them for the majority of the third.
“When you make a mistake like that, everybody’s got to be accountable,” Julien said. “It’s one of those things that happens throughout a game. From the first player to the last player, you want to make sure everybody understands. It was a mistake that you don’t expect a guy like that to make.
“It doesn’t mean you lose confidence in him, because you’re going to go back with him next game, and you hope that they bounce back. That’s what coaches do -- they coach. And that’s what I did.”

“I just tried to flip it out,” [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. “We had a tired group out there and I just fanned on it. It was a mistake that happens, and you try to bounce back.”
[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] wasn’t given a chance to bounce back because Julien decided to bench him and used him only on the power play and as the extra attacker when Rask was pulled with a minute remaining in the game.
“We cut down to three lines, so he wasn’t a part of those three lines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” the coach explained. “When it was a power play, he’s a very good player 5 on 4. He’s also a very good player and has made some good plays 6 on 5. Where he struggled was 5 on 5, so we put him in a position where he could help us and took him out of positions where he made mistakes and probably wasn’t at his best.”
When asked if he thought Julien lost confidence in his play, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] was careful with his answer.
“I don’t know; that’s a question you have to ask him," [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] said. "He still puts me on the power play and gives me regular shifts. I just have to take advantage of it.”
Since returning to the lineup on Dec. 2 after missing the first 23 games of the season due to post-concussion syndrome, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points. He's also a minus-8.
