Rock Music Waving Waves Once Again
‘Chelle of a Show. So Much More for Encore, Shocking
Political Punk, or Mantle carrying Folkie?
Michelle Shocked is a true folk troubadour in the traditional style. With anecdotes between and during songs, as she wryly observes her life experiences, at one point she declares with a smile “you can’t make this stuff up”. How true. All her songs are personal in a heart-on-your-sleeve manner. Tonight she was joined by The Jim Chayka Trio (Jim Chayka - banjo gucci watches for men, Alisa Rose - fiddle gucci on sale, Wes Langlois -guitar cheap gucci sunglasses, and Dr ‘Beat’ Boxer David Weissman.) Unlike most headliners Michelle happily sat in the wings taping along. An enjoyable short set followed – but the crowd were waiting for the skills of tonight’s headliner, Michelle Shocked. Sure enough she emerged shortly afterwards to give a commanding performance that was both sincere and heartfelt whilst also balancing this with entertainment in abundance.
Truly dedicated.
As she bitterly chorused in one of the songs “people don’t want you rockin’ the boat, shut up and sing” perhaps aimed at the apathy of the world not the individual. Her blistering music has an equally strong message though. As proved by the sinister tones of the classic ‘Shaking Hands (Soldiers Joy)’ about the ravages of morphine, and drugs in general. Even the instrumentals from Arkansas Traveller (Woody’s Rag) found their way onto the set and were enjoyed by crowd and performers alike.
Perhaps it was to be expected that the encore featured the strongest tracks off the album ‘Come A Long Way’ and ‘Strawberry Jam’ – leaving on an absolute high. Amazingly the Encore was also followed by a stunning a capella version of ‘The Ballad of Penny Evans’ – and as if that wasn’t enough, as if to stress the unassuming nature and humble realism of ‘Chelle, she exited the stage front and stayed around for well over an hour signing autographs and chatting to friends.
Her entire performance has a posture of pure punk and a swagger matched only by her skill as a musician. Whilst making eye contact with nearly everyone in the audience – not because it’s a small crowd but such is the intensity of her all round performance. ‘When I Grow Up’ was given a rendition true to it’s quality. After playing her most famous number she mentioned that the song referenced as the wedding song in ‘Anchorage’ was ‘Carrickfergus’ – and encouraged this Irish crowd to give them a rendition, which it promptly did.
The whole evening had a political message and an important and passionate one, but not a tirade. Her’s is a subtle but observant feminist stand point, with broader and more environmental concerns. It was therefore a shame that she got calls to ‘sing’ midway through one of her storytelling interludes.
Sincerity, Posing Punk Posture.
