Because the causes of oversleeping are multi-factorial and typically cannot be traced to any one source, treatment tends to be symptomatic. This symptomatic approach boils down to sleep hygiene, which is a fancy term for sleeping habits, such as your personal bedtime habits setting a bedtime and sticking to it, regular exercise, avoiding caffeine and spicy foods too close to bedtime); your sleeping environment choosing comfortable bedding and using your bed only for sleep and sex, keeping the room temperature at a cool setting); and your pre-bedtime rituals light snack, relaxation techniques, a warm bath or shower, a little bit of reading).
Although sleeping longer than eight or nine hours a night is not always linked to any of the first three causes listed above, there are certain recognized health risks associated with consistently sleeping for longer periods than the average.

Sleep disorders such as narcolepsy (a neurological condition that causes uncontrollable bouts of sleepiness) and sleep apnea (frequent brief awakenings caused by interrupted breathing) can lead to increased tiredness during the day. Both inability to sleep (insomnia) and sleeping too much (hypersomnia) have been linked to depression; also, to low socioeconomic status.Alcohol and certain prescription drugs can cause sleepiness. For some people, sleeping longer than eight or nine hours a night may just be their normal sleep pattern.Health Risks Associated with Sleeping Too Much
Why Do People Sleep Too Much?
We all know how important it is to get enough sleep. Although age, lifestyle, overall health, and other individual factors affect how much sleep each person needs, most experts agree that seven to nine hours a night is optimal. We know that if we get less than seven hours at minimum, we will be tired the next morning, and we also know that a consistent pattern of too little sleep can lead to performance problems, such as irritability, difficulty concentrating, and impaired judgment, which obviously can be very dangerous when you are driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery. Too little sleep has also been linked to serious physiological conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
There are several reasons why a person might sleep too much.
Sleeping too long can actually make you feel more tired.Increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are all associated with oversleeping -- although it is unclear whether these conditions are caused by the oversleeping itself or by the depression and low socioeconomic status with which oversleeping is strongly linked.Too much sleeping is also associated with higher death rates. The exact reason for this is not known [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although, again, depression and low socioeconomic status may play a part.Headaches upon awakening -- sometimes called "sleep hangovers" -- are associated with sleeping too long. Experts think such headaches may be caused by dehydration or by altered levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin.Sleeping too long can lead to back pain [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or can worsen such pain if you are prone to it.What Treatments are Available for Sleeping Too Long?
But if seven hours is the minimum most people need to function adequately in daily life and stay healthy, will we function even better and be healthier if we get more than nine hours? As a general rule [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our bodies will not allow us to sleep much longer than what is optimal for each one of us. However, people who have hypersomnia -- a recognized medical condition characterized by feeling very sleepy during waking hours and sleeping unusually long hours at night -- regularly sleep for up to 12 hours every night, and may still feel the need to take naps during the day.
