He visits places like the Holy Land Theme Park in Florida, which exhibits Americans dressed up as biblical characters and holds mock biblical venues for people to visit. He also goes to Kentucky to visit the Creation Museum, which shows dinosaurs living simultaneously with humans and gives another "theme park" view of religion. This is part of the commercialism that falls under Maher's scrutiny. At one point, he discusses the materialism shown by a Christian minister who is unable to verbalize the apparent contradiction between scripture and his ostentatious garb.
Hypocrisy is skewered [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too, from gay-bashing people whose faith calls them to "love one another," to footage of Ted Haggert proposing the wonders of Christian sex [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even as he was secretly engaging in homosexual trysts. There is even a skeptic from the Vatican who discusses some of the difficult-to-explain tenets of the faith. Clips of Maher poking fun at religion in some of his old comedy routines are integrated into his current search for understanding of belief in the unseen and unknown.

Comedy Films About Religion
Bill Maher is a comedian [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and his comedic talent is in evidence in the documentary Religulous. But underneath the occasional jabs and the title combining ridiculous and religion, Mr. Maher makes a seemingly earnest attempt to understand why people pray to an invisible God. In one scene, he even asks the congregation to pray for him.
Hypocrisy in the Christian Church is Portrayed
Maher shares his own religious background, even bringing in his mother and sister to look at his childhood upbringing. His father was Jewish, his mother Catholic, but only the children were forced to attend church (until age 13). He speaks to various clerics, from a priest in the Vatican to a rabbi in the temple, to Jews for Jesus and "reformed" gay pastor who runs a ministry helping people move from the gay lifestyle to a Christian one.

This is obviously an important topic for Maher. He admits that some of the people of faith he interviewed are good people and sincere, but he is concerned about the extremists who kill, burn and pillage in the name of their God or their faith. He wonders about the legitimacy of "selling the invisible product." Meant more to make one think than to give one chuckles, this is a more serious film than may be anticipated. Worth viewing if you are open to a critical and provocative look at the state of religion in America.
He visits a trucker's chapel and a speaks with a musician turned pastor. We are shown film footage of George W. Bush discussing his beliefs in God and how they are incorporated into his foreign policy. Maher admits to concern that both Osama Bin Laden and George W. Bush are religious zealots who believe they have God on their side, with everybody else living or dying with the consequences of those beliefs.
