An Education Movie Review
Lone Scherfig's An Education
The true heart of this film resides in Carey Mulligan’s hopeful, yet cynical and world-weary portrayal of Jenny, a girl who desperately wants to feel that she knows what’s going on. In her eyes, adult life is a terrifying prospect [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one with responsibilities and low expectations for a lucrative job, as well as little to no chance of true happiness. She honestly feels like all of her teachers have died inside, and she desperately wants to avoid that same fate. Mulligan conveys all this through an assured veneer that, just beneath the surface, reveals the frailty and uncertainty that she truly feels. She’s accompanied capably by Sarsgaard, whose only fault in his performance is getting through his less-than-convincing British accent. Otherwise, he’s able to effectively convey the charming, calculated David, who may have more secrets than Jenny could have expected.
Besides the performances, which are quite nice, the script and direction are other parts of the film worth examining. Sherfig doesn’t attempt anything too crazy in his camerawork, instead letting the film breathe and allowing the actors to carry most of the story. That said, it works very well, and the scenes in Paris and other fancy vacations David takes Jenny on translate Jenny’s absolute wonder at these new (to her) sights. What’s more, Nick Hornby, the acclaimed writer of books such as High Fidelity and About a Boy, paints a simple, yet elegantly pragmatic look at how trapped many young girls probably felt, having just recently heard about women’s rights and equality, but being torn down by the hard realities of life, thinking that marrying a rich man is the only way out.
One fateful day, she runs across David (Peter Sarsgaard), a suave older man who gives her a ride home in a storm, and eventually begins to take her out on the town, letting her see all the fabulous concerts and events that she’s always dreamed of. Eventually [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she gets so involved in his seemingly glamorous life that she begins to examine her priorities and expectations, and try to figure out what she wants for herself, despite what everyone knows and fears about the path she’s taking.
Carey Mulligan Gives an Oscar-Worthy Breakout Performance
An Oscar-nominated adaptation of a memoir by Lynn Barber, a British journalist, An Education follows the story of Jenny (played by newcomer Carey Mulligan), a charismatic, lively 16-year-old living in Britain in the 1960s. On the surface, she seems like your typical nice, prissy British girl – prepping to go to Oxford, sneaking out for smokes with her friends, dreaming of going to Paris – but one look at her home life reveals that she wants more. After all, her father (Alfred Molina, who steals many a scene) just wants her to go to Oxford at whatever cost [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meaning that she has to do only things that will make her look good on her application (playing the cello, but never seeing concerts).
Nick Hornby’s Script and Lone Sherfig’s Direction Stand Out
